Two popular groups start up at Mind in Furness in the coming weeks and you are invited to get involved!

Mind in Furness will be running two of their popular groups again in the coming weeks. Starting June 6 the Food and Mood will be back up and running.

It is open to all so to book a place ring us, pop into our offices on School Street, Barrow, or message us on our Mind in Furness Facebook page.

The group is run by Mind in Furness volunteer Richard Cupid to help people become aware of the affects food can have on their mood.

He explained: "When you feel depressed, stressed or anxious we reach food that seems appealing at the time, such as fatty food and sugar.

"These are some of the worse things they can do, leading to sugar spikes and lower mood.

"There are 10 spaces on the group and they fill up fast, it is an open forum for people to share knowledge and experiences and normally last 1 hour."

Some comments from those who attended the last group sessions “After coming on the course I was able to judge how I what I eat made me feel."

“This was very interesting I am now adding more veg to my diet and feel full of energy."

Recovery Star is a six week programme and starts on June 8.

Course leader and Mind in Furness Connect Worker Julie Wilson explained how the course will be every Thursday and lasts for about one-and-a-half hours.

She added: "The group helps people to manage their mental health in 10 key areas that are affected by mental health.

"These can range from relationship issues, addictive behavior and managing mental health.

"Once the course if over there will be one-to-one support available for as long as that person needs it.

"People who have done the course have been helped along with their journey forward. and have found work, started volunteering or gone back into education. "Most importantly they have got their lives back."

Those who have taken part in Recovery Star had this to said: "I admit I felt it was hard for each different topic but knowing I had the support and helping me talk about it made me feel more reassured."

"Julie set a warm welcoming tone. The course was very informative and enlightening and was very well delivered by Julie and the volunteers."

"Julie was a good communicator, very understanding and approachable. The programme promoted a positive approach to mental health well-being."
